Beschreibung: In contemporary discussions of modernity, secularization, globalization, and postcolonialism the concept of “civilization” enjoys a great revival. The most famous example is probably Samuel P. Huntington’s theory of the “clash of civilizations”, including the critique of Francis Fukuyama’s notion of the “end of history”. Moreover, apart from these popular works, we can observe an attempt to renew a systematic theoretical approach, the so-called “civilizational analysis”, which is most notably presented in the discussions of “Axial Age” and “multiple modernities”, developed by the Israeli sociologist Shmuel Noah Eisenstadt. In this light, the concept of civilization seems to be one of the most important theoretical frameworks of contemporary political sciences, historical sociology, and humanities in general.

The concept of civilization has, however, a long history, which precedes present discussions. One of its most remarkable chapters was written by the Czech philosopher Jan Patočka. His work is nowadays read from a variety of perspectives. Yet for questions of civilizational analysis especially his concept of “rational civilization” is of substantial importance. It provides us with an original interpretation of modernity and is of high relevance for contemporary debate.
